In 1890, Conrad settled in England and began writing in English, his third language after Polish and French. His first novel, “Almayer’s Folly,” was published in 1895. Conrad went on to write many acclaimed works of fiction, including “Lord Jim,” “Nostromo,” and “The Secret Agent.” However, his most famous work is “Heart of Darkness,” which was published in 1899.
“Heart of Darkness” is a novella set in the Congo during the height of European imperialism in Africa. The story follows Charles Marlow, a sailor who is sent to the Congo to retrieve a rogue trader named Kurtz. Along the way, Marlow witnesses the brutality of colonialism and the psychological deterioration of Kurtz, who has become obsessed with the idea of acquiring ivory at any cost.
